UFC 198 results: Stipe Miocic knocks out Fabricio Werdum, claims heavyweight title

(MMA Fighting)
One punch was all it took to give Cleveland a champion and send a party in Curitiba crashing to a halt.

Hard-hitting Stipe Miocic scored a one-punch knockout of Fabricio Werdum in the main event of UFC 198 on Saturday night, claiming the UFC heavyweight title and sending the third-largest crowd in company home disappointed.

Miocic was backpedaling when Werdum aggressively charged after him and ran right into a looping right hand which caught him flush on the jaw. Werdum face-planted to the mat and the bout was waved off at the 2:47 mark of the opening round in front of an estimated 45,000 fans at Arena de Baixada.

"Cleveland, we've got a champion, baby," Miocic (15-2) said of his infamously championship-starved hometown.

The only blow that mattered was the first big one in the fight, as the first two minutes consisted of the fighters feeling each other out and throwing occasional strikes. As soon as the fight was waved off, Miocic hopped over the cage to celebrate with his cornermen.

"He's tough, said Micoic, who scored his 11th career KO. "He hit me, and I knocked him out. I hit him with a right hand and that was it."

Werdum (20-6-1) had a six-fight win streak snapped.
